How to upload and attach files to Joomla articles

This plugin is used to attach files instead of inserting links into Joomla articles.

Why you should use it:

  • Encrypt files, hide the direct link of the file.
  • Upload files and attach them directly.
  • Attach executable files.
  • Count the number of downloads
  • Restrict download feature for guests

 

This extension works for Joomla 3, 4 and 5.

After successful installation, go to the Admin page > Plugin Manager > Content - File Attachments to set it up and enable it.

The parameters include:

  • Folder to save files: Attachments will be stored here.
  • Restrict Uploads: Enable/disable file moderation. If this feature is enabled, only files with the allowed file types (Allowed File Types) extension can be uploaded.
  • Allow Guest Download File: Set file download permissions for guests
  • Show Download Count
  • Show extension of File
  • Show description of File

 

Go to Joomla's Article Management section:

  • For existing (already existing) articles: In the article editing form, switch to the "Attachments" tab to get started.
  • For newly created posts, you need to press the "Save" button to be able to see the "Attachments" tab. After this, you switch to the "Attachments" tab to get started.

 

By default, files after uploading will be attached to the end of the article. However, you can still change where these attachments are displayed.

Insert the syntax {jattachment:all} where you want the attachments to be displayed.

To insert any file into an article, click the "Insert this file in another article" button at the "Attachments" tab and follow the instructions.

    I migrated about a thousand items with attachments from K2 using your tool and attachments plugin. I initially did this on a test account. Everything worked fine over there. The migrated article attachments worked fine. Then I backed it all up and moved it to my live domain. Now none of the attachments load. All I get is Exception File Not Found and I can't figure out where to look. Turning on error reporting and debug don't tell me anything. I am guessing the old files were not moved during the migration correct? Or how does that all work? I still have all the original folders in the original places as far as I can tell.

    Is there any restriction on the name of the files that are attached? I have noticed in several cases when the file name has many characters or special characters (such as hyphens, underscores, parentheses, etc.) it does not upload the file.

      @Daskaloudis Athanasios I'm not sure, but there might be a limit on the length of the filename. I recommend that you rename the file before uploading. Once uploaded, try to rename it from the editor.

      Is there no possibility that - when you click on the file name - the file opens - for example a pdf file - in a new window (_blank) without a download box?

      This is how it works when you link to a document in an article if you selected "open in new window" in the link

    Unfortunately, the attachments in the articles do not appear when I display them as "Category Blog" or "Featured Articles".
    Is this normal behavior and/or is there a solution for this?

      That worked. Now I just have to make sure that I make the change again with the next update. Maybe you could make a button in the plugin configuration for “Display attachments in blog layout”?

      @dirk lenze By default, it just displays on the article layout. In your case, try to remove line 378,379 of file plugins/content/jmpattachments/jmpattachments.php. I hope it will work well!

    Hello, is it possible, to sort the files in two columns?

    And is it possible to place files in the middle of text in content area {pdf-file ...}

    And if there are more than one file ... to place the files in different positions in the text?

      @Frank Hi,
      Unfortunately, currently this plugin can only display 1 column. Of course, you can insert it anywhere.

      You can change the file name and add a description to the file. However, it currently does not support file sorting🙄

      yes, correct - if 6 files, two in one line - in 3 rows then.

      Additional
      - is it posseible to sort the direction of the files (in backend drag and drop upa and down?

      - is it pssible to fill in a own text - instead of showing the original file name - as it is often ugly to read!

      And is it possible, to see better icons for the different fily types ... especially pdf has nice looking desings.

      Ant lastly ... is it possible to show some files here ... and later in another block, some more fles ... as aksked in my fist post?

    There's a conflict with the FaLang Pro translation extension

    the attachments tab is not displayed, and even after saving the translated article version, there's this error message: You must save the article to use this feature.

Hello your previous CCS advise was very helpful.

I have been googling how to change the menu colours, as the black text on my purple background is not very readable. However everything I have tried to change the text colour of the Off-Canvas main menu text to white did not work.

Would you know what custom CSS I would need to change all menu items to white text (including submenus).
Probably need background colour to not be white when hovering over submenus

Any help you can provide would be gratefully appreciated (or a pointer to some useful help).

for Off-Canvas it says

Joomla cannot detect the extension's compatibility with the target version of Joomla.

have you implemented the compatibility stuff for Joomla to upgrade extensions correctly ?

OK getting back to looking at my website

Have got two off canvas menus working (1. for tools and 2. for main menu)

However I can only get the Main menu to display the first level of menu items.

Have you any suggestions for getting the sub menu items to display ?
N.B. the menu item with sub menu items does display a down arrow, but trying to click on it only display the item at the main menu level.
